In the spring of
2001 Dick Lovett’s a long-standing client of ours approached us with a
proposal to remodel an existing car showroom and workshops which we had
designed for BMW back in 1983, to form a New Porsche Center for Swindon.
The site possessed a number of attributes which helped with the solution.
It sat North Facing on a very prominent roundabout site in West Swindon,
surrounded by other dealerships and industrial and commercial buildings
of generally mediocre design. There was established landscaping framing
the site which had been maintained to a high standard.
The site has to be passed when accessing the designer outlet Village and
Sainsbury’s The principal brief was to provide a car showroom and workshops
out of the existing building which did not look like a conversion.
