Housing, Ashtead, Surrey

A former industrial and commercial site once used for the manufacture of photographic plates, paper and then leather processing until conversion to offices in 1972.
One of the priorities in the redevelopment of this site was to provide privacy for the surrounding residences, a commodity which had been lacking when the site was used commercially. The resulting scheme replaces the large mass of the original commercial structure with a series of 24 flats and houses of varying size, proportion and materiality.
In order to be viable the scheme cleverly disguises the bulk of the housing by adopting a ‘mill style’ appearance. The internal highway within the scheme takes the form of a traditional gated mews which screens the proposed refuge storage from the adjacent road.
