The redevelopment
of the former bus garage in St Peters Street was governed by a design
brief prepared by St Albans Planning Department to secure a satisfactory
solution within the conservation area.
The scheme has been constrained by 13 key views into the scheme, one key
view out to St Peters Church, a very important relationship to the ancient
Pemberton almshouses which date back to 1627 and are very small in scale,
requiring great sensitivity in the development on this corner of the site.
There is a large office headquarters building to the north and the area
of St Peters Street encompasses a number of Edwardian villas dating from
around 1910. There are three major trees of importance on the site which
were required to be retained. The resulting scheme proves 39 flats and
houses in a mixture of two, three and four storey buildings.
